Los Angeles has been a home away from home to me since my brother moved here 20 years ago. Yet I’m still a touristy nerd in the presence of the rich entertainment history here. The theaters of LA themselves are living histories, many leading colorful lives that spanned vaudeville, live theater, jazz, comedy, adult films...many going through disrepair and reinvention along the way.
From an epic Art Deco masterpiece like the Wiltern, to the innovative midcentury achievement of the Cinerama Dome, theaters in Los Angeles are also study in architectural history. Daring, ornate, grand mashups of styles, representing the lure of the theaters — and for me, like Los Angeles itself — an immersive, dreamlike departure from reality.
